Annie Oakley was born Phoebe Ann Moses in 1860 in rural Darke County, Ohio
At age ten, she was sent to work for a family who treated her cruelly; she called them “the wolves”Annie ran away from them and was reunited with her mother
Annie support her family by shooting game in the woods and selling it to a shopkeeper.
Because of her marksmanship, she was able to pay off the mortgage on her mother’s house
In 1875, at age 15 Annie entered a shooting contest against touring champion Frank Butler.
She beat him in the competition
Annie married Frank Butler in 1876
Annie adopted the professional name “Oakley,” from the town of Oakley, Ohio
