1. Annie Oakley was born Phoebe Ann Moses in 1860 in rural Darke County, Ohio

2. At age ten, she was sent to work for a family who treated her cruelly; she called them “the wolves”Annie ran away from them and was reunited with her mother

3. Annie support her family by shooting game in the woods and selling it to a shopkeeper.
   Because of her marksmanship, she was able to pay off the mortgage on her mother’s house

4. In 1875, at age 15 Annie entered a shooting contest against touring champion Frank Butler.
   She beat him in the competition

5. Annie married Frank Butler in 1876

6. Annie adopted the professional name “Oakley,” from the town of Oakley, Ohio
   

7. In 1884, Oakley attracted the attention of legendary Native American warrior Sitting Bull, who
   “adopted” her and named her “Watanya Cicilla,” or “Little Sure Shot”

8. Annie performed with Buffalo Bill Cody’s show at the American Exposition in London in 1887,
   where she met Queen Victoria, who called her a “very clever little girl”

9. On several occasions Annie hit 483 of 500, 943 of 1,000; and 4,772 of 5,000 targets

10. It is rumored that Oakley frugal, She one said “I’ve made a good deal of money in my time, but
    I never believe in wasting a dollar of it.” She gave money to orphan charities, and helped support
    her mother and his daughters

11. She filed filing 55 lawsuits against newspapers that had libeled her, winning or settling 54 of them

12. Annie Oakley died on November 3, 1926. Her husband of 50 years Frank Butler, t died 18 days later
